Pacers 2 – 3 Wimbledon Saints

By Easter Island Leveridge

After their best run of results of the season, Pacers welcomed league leaders Wimbledon Saints to South park.

With another classic pacer day behind us, our thoughts go out to our co-manager, who was not present.

He had to look at wedding venues!

On pacer day!

Lets all bow our heads and take a moment to remember our old friend Nick Kearns.

AMEN

A busy, battling start set the scene for the game, Alex and Adequate Ash’s industry and commitment gave Wimbledon Saints little time to settle in the middle of the park.

Both teams struggled to create any clear-cut chances apart from the occasional lob over the Pacer defence.

Three or Four one on ones followed, but last-ditch tackling from Matt and Kevla and some sublime goalkeeping kept the score nil all.

With Pacers second leading goal scorer of all time, and all round good guy, donning the gloves because of future marathon commitments, (jordan.leveridge@justgiving.com) chances were few and far between for Putney going forward.

Hawaii 5-0 was feeding on scraps, and those scraps wouldn’t have fed a new-born sparrow.

After some pinball wizardry in the middle of the park, a defence splitter of a pass set the Saints’ tricky left winger through on goal for his third one-on-one chance of the first half.

This time he made no mistake, brushing off the last line of defence to finish with a cool 2-foot-high lob over the tallest man in south-west London.

With half time knocking on the door, Pacers won a free kick 35 yards from goal, A beaut of a ball in to the mix caused chaos and a Saints defender put through his own net.

Kevla wheeled away like he’d scored a cup final winner, the gamesmanship won out and the dubious goal committee ruling in favour of the tough-tackling centre back.

Feel free to take a moment and look at the league’s top scorers via this link.

Now take a moment to have a long hard look at yourself and maybe think aloud: “If he can bang them in, why can’t I?”

Half time 1-1

The second half was very much the same apart from both teams were attacking in the other direction.

Another gut-busting performance from the now left back, Popo, saw him up and down the left flank.

On one ill-timed forage into the opposition half left a massive gap into which a saints player duly spotted and then slotted the perfect pass.

The winger collected and cut in and smashed a wicked, dipping, swirling, thunderous cross into the box, to which the new keeper made a smart stop but couldn’t quite push it to safety. An on rushing Saint filled his boots.

Ok, I may have fumbled a worm burner.

2-1

With time running down and the game looking to fizzle out. a long throw, (which looked dangerous all day) was flicked to the back post.

Nick ‘I’ve got my balls in a vice’ Kearns headed back into the mix and good Ash was on hand to bang in his first goal in pacer colours.

2-2

Pacers had a couple of minutes to see out the game and take a well-earned point from the league leaders.

But that’s not the pacer way, another hopeful ball over the defence left Kev to be man handled to the floor.

With his centre back partner Oli not covering round AGAIN, The striker had time to mug off the out-rushing keeper to break Pacer hearts.

Final score 3-2

Had we have played like this all year we would be up in the European places.

MOM Alex and Good Ash, relentless against three opposition midfielders.
